Rural healthcare in Uttarakhand
Since 2013

For more than two decades, Uttarayan Foundation has worked to improve access to healthcare and support vulnerable communities across Uttarakhand. Our programmes focus on rural healthcare, preventive health, cardiac care, girl-child empowerment, community support and emergency assistance.

Vision

To build a healthy and health-conscious society.

Mission

To create greater awareness about public health, reduce the burden of heart disease in Uttarakhand, connect people with healthcare resources, and expand access to medical services through telemedicine, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Dr O P Yadav

Born in 1955 to an army family, Dr Yadav studied medicine and surgery at Maulana Azad Medical College before joining the Armed Forces as a Surgical Specialist. His training in cardiothoracic surgery began at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, and continued in Australia, Melbourne and Japan, where he worked alongside some of the leading cardiac surgeons of his time and trained in paediatric cardiac surgery as well as adult care. He returned to India in 1992, and in the more than three decades since has performed upwards of 12,000 open heart surgeries, most of them after coming home - coronary bypasses, valve repairs and replacements, and congenital heart procedures among them, with a particular interest in minimally invasive, beating-heart bypass surgery.

Alongside that practice, he has chosen to carry a share of that care, free of cost, to the hills of Uttarakhand, the region he grew up believing deserved the same standard of treatment as any city. He now serves as CEO and Chief Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the National Heart Institute, New Delhi, and Director of the All India Heart Foundation, after founding the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Dharma Vira Heart Centre, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

Our Founder

Amid COVID-19, Dr. Yadav offered the state hospital space, ventilators, and equipped ambulances to support underserved areas.

The region's first dedicated cardiac facility opened at Almora base hospital, treating over 5,000 patients in its first year.

Diagnosed with two heart defects at a Foundation camp, four-year-old Suhani received free surgery in Delhi within days. She is now home and healthy.

Girls from Almora's Balika Niketan received professional training in Delhi under Nai-Umang, fully supported by the Foundation. Several have since found employment.

"My son Ayansh was born with a hole in his heart. We found out in 2017, and for four or five years we went from hospital to hospital in Uttarakhand without getting treatment. On the advice of Dr Nishank ji, we came to the National Heart Institute, and within two days my son's surgery was done, completely free. My request to the Uttarakhand government is to bring facilities like this to the state itself, so families like ours don't have to travel so far. My son is completely healthy today, and I am grateful to Dr O P Yadav, Mahipal ji, and the whole team."

"Dr O P Yadav and his organisation, Uttarayana Foundation, have done outstanding work in Almora district and neighbouring districts over the past several years for healthcare, particularly heart disease prevention. Mr O P Yadav has successfully performed cardiac surgery on more than a hundred people from Uttarakhand... I extend my heartfelt appreciation for this effort by Dr O P Yadav and Uttarayana Foundation, and wish them a bright future."
